Rethinking Clean - the truth about QUATS

The average household uses common cleaners and antimicrobials that are toxic and jeopardize our health.

QUATS, or quaternary ammonium compounds, are a class of chemicals commonly found in cleaning and disinfecting products. They are positively charged ions with four organic groups attached to a central nitrogen atom. These compounds exhibit antimicrobial properties, making them effective for killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. However, it's essential to be aware of their characteristics and potential concerns on human health and wellbeing.

  1. Common QUATS:

    • Benzalkonium chloride

    • Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride

    • Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid

  2. Uses:

    • Disinfectants: QUATS are often used in disinfectant products, including surface wipes, sprays, and sanitizing solutions.

    • Fabric Softeners: Some fabric softeners and laundry detergents contain QUATS.

    • Personal Care Products: QUATS can be found in certain shampoos, conditioners, and antiseptic solutions.

  3. Concerns:

    • Health Effects: Prolonged exposure to QUATS may cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, or eye irritation.

    • Allergies: Sensitivity or allergic reactions can occur in some people when exposed to QUATS.

    • Potential Environmental Impact: QUATS persist in the environment and contribute to aquatic toxicity.

  4. Alternatives:

    • Natural Cleaners: Consider using natural cleaning agents like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon for certain cleaning purposes.

    • Green Cleaning Products: Look for cleaning products labeled as "green" or "eco-friendly," which often use alternative, less harmful ingredients. Be mindful of the environmental impact of cleaning products and choose alternatives that are more environmentally friendly when possible.

    • Regulatory agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), provide guidelines for the safe use of QUATS in cleaning and disinfecting products.

    • Avoid all antimicrobial soaps and cleaners - simple soap, like Shaklee’s concentrated Basic H2® is non-toxic and safe.
